  • Nkisi will release an album via UIQ in January. 7 Directions is the Congolese-born, London-based artist's first official full-length, following EPs this year and last. UIQ, the label run by Lee Gamble, describes it as electronic interpolations of Congolese percussive polyrhythms. Conceptually, it's informed by the cosmology of the Bantu-Kongo, a Central African ethnic group, and particularly by the scholar Dr. Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau. It's a follow-up to Terminal, the album from Egyptian abstract hip-hop producer Zuli, which comes out on UIQ in November. "When we hear before we see, voice and sound waves interplay between consciousness and hallucinations," said Nkisi. "Through manipulating rhythm, we create movements of energy... this energy determines collective behaviour and allows for new ways of producing knowledge." NON Worldwide, the collective Nkisi founded alongside Angel-Ho and Chino Amobi, also released three compilation albums this year. Listen to the final track on 7 Directions.
