Kranky's next release is The Deep End, an album of analog synthesizer pieces by Portland-based artist Saloli.
The Deep End is the first solo release from Saloli, real name Mary Sutton. Due to arrive in late October, the album was borne out of a performance she gave at a clothing-optional soaking-pool sauna. "I had never composed for synth before," she says of the experience, "but wanted to make something people sitting motionless and naked in hot bubbly water would want to hear."
She cites the 19th- and 20th-century avant-garde composer Erik Satie as a key influence on the album's nine tracks, which she wrote specifically to be played live, with no over-dubs or post-production.
Before The Deep End arrives, Kranky has two releases scheduled for September: longtime label affiliate Tim Hecker's Konoyo LP, and Solifuge, the debut album from Less Bells, a project led by California multi-instrumentalist and Kenneth James Gibson collaborator Julie Carpenter.
