- The New York producer will put out his latest full-length on Break World Records.
Bookworms has a new full-length called Appropriation Loops on the way.
Appropriation Loops follows Nicholas Dawson's debut LP Xenophobe, and it comes via Break World Records, the fledgling imprint that has also worked with Via App and James Ferraro. Dawson's Bookworms project started off in 2012, and "African Rhythms," from his debut 12-inch for L.I.E.S., remains one of the defining tracks on the label.
The press release defines Appropriation Loops as "recurrent, fluctuant feedback loops in popular and unpopular culture." The label cites several examples of appropriation turning back on itself: "Kraftwerk's mechanical interpretation of Motown hits of '60s and '70s Detroit was later echoed by Detroit techno producers who subsequently put the funk back in it and made it more minimal," it says. "People want to know where their chicken comes from (free-range, grass-fed, no antibiotics), but they don't want to know where their music comes from."
Dawson tells RA he integrated a computer into his workflow for the first time on Appropriation Loops, which also sees him experimenting heavily with modular synthesis. It's also the first Bookworms record to feature collaborations. He explains, "The first track features vocal tape loops from Alex Suarez (of Cienfuegos), a Fender Rhodes solo from Jack Callahan and some drones by Via App towards the end."
Dawson, who's played with everyone from the Silver Apples to Rrose in recent years, says, "I feel like people can dance to one synth line with little to no drums. Maybe just a different kind of dancing. I see YouTube comments with people talking about how Larry Levan used to play [Manuel Göttsching's] E2-E4 at the Paradise Garage at 5 AM. I'm very interested in things like that. This record is more of a question than a statement at the end of the day."
