  • Soul Jazz will release a compilation dedicated to the first wave of rap records that came out of New York at the turn of the '80s. The London label's latest package, titled Boombox - Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro and Disco Rap 1979 - 82, will hit the shelves on June 3rd. Many of the release's 17 tracks were among the earliest examples in this innovative style, which saw local MCs rapping over contemporary disco tunes played by a live band. (Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight" was the biggest hit from this period.) Acts like Mr Sweety G, Harlem World Crew, Sugar Daddy and Mistafide all feature. Boombox will be available digitally, as a triple-pack LP and as a deluxe CD, which comes with a 40-page booklet, slipcase, photography and original label artwork. Listen to the closing track, Mistafide's "Equidity Funk."
