  • Autonomous Africa will release Youth Stand Up, a collaborative album bringing together young musicians from Belize, Ghana and Glasgow, on October 9th. The project was first conceived by Emily MacLaren, one of the people behind Glasgow's Green Door Studio. A cast of 11 local musicians, including members of Golden Teacher, Whilst, Psychic Soviets and Froth, started working on the foundations of the LP in October last year. In November, Maclaren, fellow engineer Stuart Evans and Golden Teacher's OIiver Pitt and Laurence Pitt set off for Lebeha Drumming Center in Hopkins, Belize. Two months later, Cassie Oji (also of Golden Teacher) would replace Oliver, and the four of them would travel to Tafi Cultural Institute in Tafi Atome, Ghana. The aim of the trips was to deliver new equipment, host workshops and oversee recording sessions with local rising talent. In Belize they worked with five members of the Tuteme Band, while in Ghana they worked with seven artists making hiplife and borborbor music. Upon the team's return to Scotland, the finishing touches were applied to the ten tracks. The album will come out via JD Twitch's label next month, with all proceeds split between the Tuteme Band and the Tafi Cultural Institute. As a further fundraiser, JD Twitch, Golden Teacher, Sacred Paws and Ghana Soundz will all play The Vic Bar on November 27th. You can read more about The Green Door Studio in Kit Macdonald's feature from last year. Listen to "Come With Me" below.
