  • Waldorf has announced Nave, its first foray into iPad synthesizers. The German synth-maker is known for its work with wavetable synthesis, and Nave continues that tradition. But given the iPad's large screen and touch control, its approach to wavetable looks and acts a little different than it did in the past. Two wavetable oscillators drive the sound engine, with a speech synthesizer and Waldorf's Überwave module allowing for considerable modulation. You can borrow wavetables from hardware Waldorf modules like the Blofeld or create your own by loading in audio files. Spectral edition options make use of the touchscreen, letting you gesturally tweak three-dimensional graphs. Filter, drive and various effects round out the sound-shaping options, and a four-track recorder lets you compose right inside the app. Audiobus and MIDI compatibility mean the synth can be part of a larger setup, be it entirely within your iPad or in a larger production setup. Get a sense for how it works in the video below.
Waldorf Nave is now available through the App Store for an introductory price of $11.99.
