- The five-hour improvised performance at the Museum of Modern Art will mark the launch of Clown & Sunset Aesthetics.
Nicolas Jaar will choreograph a five-hour, improvised, audio-visual performance piece titled From Scratch at MoMA PS.1 in New York next Sunday.
Even though Jaar's live sets (both by himself and with his band) have drawn plenty of praise, he's always held an affinity for sounds that stray away from the dancefloor, as evidenced in the downtempo and ambient excursions of last year's Space Is Only Noise. Next weekend's performance in PS1's geodesic dome looks to be his most experimental project yet.
The event is a collaboration between PS.1, Pitchfork and Jaar's label, Clown & Sunset. "I will be sitting in the middle of the dome among microphones, speakers and analog equipment," Jaar explains, "creating soundscapes out of feedback, recording rhythms and playing back field recordings." The show will start off primarily as a solo performance before Jaar is joined by a collection of instrumentalists (including collaborators on guitar and saxaphone), dancers and singers as the set progresses. A videographer will be also be on hand to project live visuals around the dome.
From Scratch will mark the launch of Clown & Sunset Aesthetics (CSA), a multimedia company founded by Jaar and his friend and filmmaker Noah Kraft, that will become the parent of Clown & Sunset. Later this year, CSA will release an album with a new roster of label artists. Details on that are still forthcoming.
