- All the details are in for the French duo's first film score.
After more than a year of trickling out bits of information, all details for Daft Punk's Tron Legacy soundtrack have now been confirmed.
For Guy Manuel and Thomas Bangalter, music and film have always been closely linked. Their early music videos by Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry are classics in their own right, and their 2001 album Discovery was written partly as a score to Interstella 5555, a film the duo produced with Japanese anime legend Leiji Matsumoto. In 2006, Daft Punk wrote and directed Electroma, a playfully avant-garde picture that featured none of their own music. And though Tron Legacy is the first score they've produced together, Bangalter has already done two for French director Gasper Noe: Irreversible from 2002 and this year's Enter the Void.
Tron Legacy will be Daft Punk's first body of original work in five years, after their 2005 album Human After All. According to a recent interview with Dazed and Confused, the soundtrack was recorded with a 90-piece orchestra and was heavily inspired by film scores by Max Steiner (King Kong), Bernard Herrmann (various Hitchcock films) and Vangelis (Blade Runner). Bangalter says the album has more classical sound than anything Daft Punk have released to date. "This is what Daft Punk would have done in 1700," he says.
Nonetheless, what's come out from the album so far has no shortage of the distorted synths and stomping beats for which the French duo are known. Have a look at the video below to hear the track "Derezzed":
