  • Sasu Ripatti will reprise his Vladislav Delay guise for the follow up to 2007's Whistleblower album later this year. Ripatti also goes under the names Luomo, Uusitalo, Conoco and Sistal, but his earliest work can be traced back to the dub and jazz inflected electronica of the Vladislav Delay project. Previous albums under that name have been released on the much lauded Chain Reaction and Mille Plateaux labels as well as his own Huume Recordings, but this time he'll be partnering up with Leeds-based imprint Leaf for what will be his ninth Vladislav Delay full-length. Entitled Tummaa, the album will showcase Ripatti's "introverted and slightly darker side," with Sasu explaining that "Tummaa means dark or darkness, which reflects the music on the album somehow but also the fact that I worked on the album during 'kaamos' time of the year in Finland. Kaamos time really gets dark from December to February where you only have few hours of light per day. I really liked that and the whole winter enormously." Over the past couple of years, Ripatti has also been playing as part of the Moritz von Oswald Trio, but Tummaa sees him command a trio all of his own, with Argentine musician Lucio Capece (clarinet and saxophone) and Scottish composer and arranger Craig Armstrong (piano and Fender Rhodes) fleshing out his own live percussion. Indeed, this means that Tummaa is a retreat from his more electronically-focused projects, with Sasu confirming that he "wanted to take a new direction with Vladislav Delay, with more acoustic sound sources. I avoided as much electronics as possible, wanting to bring myself closer to my background as a drummer and percussionist." Tracklist 01. Melankolia 02. Kuula (Kiitos) 03. Mustelmia 04. Musta Planeetta 05. Toive 06. Tummaa 07. Tunnelivisio Leaf will release Tummaa on August 24th, 2009.
