  • In the early days of techno, Marco Carola was among a select few in southern Italy caught by the genre. Italo disco and house were the sound of the region. But it never really appealed to the Neapolitan DJ/producer. He instead helped to create his own techno scene there by learning how to produce the music from Detroit and the UK that was so inspiring to him. Eventually Naples became too small for his ambitions, and Carola moved on to Frankfurt, one of techno's hubs in the early '00s. It was there that his aims turned international and his hard techno sound matured into a sleeker, more minimal proposition. Ever since, his ascent has been steady, with landmarks like a fabric mix in 2007 and a full-length on Minus last year. One of the biggest reasons for his success, however, is the island of Ibiza where he was an integral part of Sven Vath's Cocoon nights for many years. Carola broke off to go solo in 2012 with an event called Music On, and its enormous numbers reconfirmed his standing as one of techno's most popular names. We caught up with Carola earlier this month in London to chat about the impact of Ibiza on his career, his Italian roots and his non-stop touring schedule.
