Exist - 1Beat 2Feet / Lookin' at Blue

  • "1Beat 2Feet" has all the sparkling sonic qualities of an Atjazz production, but it's dominated by the kind of hiccuping rhythms you'd expect of Karizma, and the track itself mimics the latter's restless reincarnations. It trots in with a vintage Basement Boys shuffle, then shifts through a passage of just bass and mouth sounds, then hi-hats and wiry strings, finally jerking itself into a broken beat gallop, accompanied by the requisite soundsystem dub sirens. The Kaytronik rework finds Karizma at his most elemental, isolating all of the track's staccato elements—kicks, beat boxing, finger clicks—for a definitive bumpy rhythm, which is loosely weaving them together with translucent wisps of melody. With "Lookin' at Blue," Exist look outwards for inspiration, towards The Undisputed Truth's 1973 take on the soul classic "Walk on By" specifically. It's a curious sample choice given that the phrase bears the same bite marks as J Dilla's Donuts sketch "Walkinonit," give or take a microsecond. In looping the sample nakedly for a full minute, and accelerating it gradually, most of the fun to be had with this number is in guessing where it will eventually land, so its final destination—harmless jazzy house, with an upright bass and eternally looping pianos—is something of a letdown. Atjazz's Astro Dub mix however is a refreshing change of pace that accesses a deeper and more bustling brand of funk, with fizzing synths, fidgety toms and jagged guitar riffs. On first glance, Exist may appear to be doing just do that, but it's in the remixes that this pairing is at its most invigorating, allowing both veterans to again get acquainted with the deep and dirty versions of themselves.
