In:motion Opening in Bristol

  • Just a few minutes walk from Bristol's main train station lies the Motion skatepark, a large warehouse that plays host to the In:Motion event series. In a similar fashion to The Warehouse Project, In:Motion run a program of parties in the latter part of the year from October to New Year's Eve. Inside the warehouse are three huge rooms and two smaller areas. As a result of the success of In:Motion, one of the larger rooms and the two smaller ones have been permanently converted into party areas, with the last two easily emptied of their ramps and half-pipes if the organisers want to use them. Two large outside areas provide respite for party goers should they need it, and there's a burger van and great bathroom facilities, too. For the second of their opening weekend nights, In:Motion's promoters assembled a lineup, in association with Bugged Out, that catered towards Bristol's insatiable appetite for bass music with L-Vis 1990 heading up the main room. There was also a strong nod towards the house end of the musical spectrum, with Heidi's Jackathon taking over the smaller Tunnel room, led by the curly-haired DJ herself along with Jamie Jones and local export Waifs & Strays. While in the smallest of three rooms, the fittingly titled Cave area, Bass Ache, Untold, Pariah and Dwindle were in control. The promoters at In:Motion have seen their event, and the premises they work out of, grow organically since its inception six years ago and this year it has, again, gone through several subtle yet important changes. The main of which is the acoustics in the main room, which have been carefully worked upon, the result being a major improvement to the sound. Other adjustments include the relocation of the bars in both the main and Tunnel rooms to allow for more space. It certainly worked a treat, with 1,500 revellers packing out the three rooms during the course of the night. The bass-heavy main area became a riotous affair, as Fake Blood and co. smashed out a relentless stream of juddering, whirring sounds—perfect for the assembled crowd which included beefy men with their tops off and excited girls on shoulders waving their hands in the air. All the while, the Tunnel and Cave rooms never lost their momentum. In particular, Heidi's Jackathon area, which was the last to close at 6 AM, held its audience captive with non-stop house of the highest calibre. Waifs & Strays' opening set kicked things off nicely, with Jamie Jones taking everyone through to a hot and sweaty climax while stragglers from the main room made their way into the Tunnel. In:Motion's promoters seem to have their finger on the pulse as far as Bristol parties go, and this event was proof that a wealth of knowledge fused with passion, investment and a bit of risk-taking can be the key to a successful venture.
