Teeth - Swarm / Shift / Sequence / Spawn

  • Matti Pentikäinen isn't exactly fresh-faced, even if it may seem like it. Member of the Ceebrolistics hip hop outfit for 15 years, the Helsinki-based "MattiP" side-stepped into dubstep in the mid-'00s and has been building steam ever since. 502 opened the sluice for his releases as Teeth that—including EPs for homegrown Noppa and now Ramp—collectively display his penchant for "drum machines, garage swing, and an impact." What Swarm / Shift / Sequence / Spawn lacks in the latter it makes up for with the rest, proving Pentikäinen's strength as a taut beatmaker. In "Frequencies" 808 kicks find themselves stranded in a moonlit forest of chilling wolf-like howls and dubby mist. "OJ" then dons a garage step and synthy sparkle that metrically punches its retention. "SW" sees the 808's return, no longer alone but garnished with a melodic playmate and strapped into a 4/4 techno regiment. "19eme," meanwhile, picks up the garage beat again and concludes sounding like a submerged L2S record that has been given the old Bristol treatment.
