Ultramarine - Find a Way

  • Nope, Ultramarine is not a brand new production pairing under a familiar name. They're the same old studio duo back in the game for the first time in 13 years. Before the extended hiatus, London based Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond were early protagonists in the live electronic arena best known for their—as Simon Reynolds once put it—"pastoral techno" opus, Every Man and Woman Is a Star. The first of a few new releases, "Find A Way" is just as earthy and organic, feels very much (a)live and seems as influenced by outer-city life as ever before. What it isn't, though, is techno. The original is a careful cacophony of congas, lush chords and stop-start drums and hits. At random intervals a breathy male vocal cuts through the tropical chatter to sigh "we've flown away" and, just as whimsically, the tempo changes without warning: it leaves you beguiled and bemused as you try to piece together what went before… The "version" is just as dishevelled in its arrangement, but pulses with more urgency thanks to an ominous kick and pulse below. Refreshing stuff.
