Henning Baer - Fierce Hundred EP

  • A cold wind blows through Henning Baer's "Fierce Hundred." Literally. It's as if the Berlin-based promoter of the Grounded Theory nights was looking for a way to make his techno even darker than before. As a compatriot of Milton Bradley—owner of some of the most barren, lonely and hardest releases of the past few years—this is no mean feat. "Fierce Hundred" is a distorted roller, a rhythm fed through a slow and not-so-meticulous meat grinder. It's no surprise, then, to see Baer reworking a Sawf track on the flip. His warm-up paced take on the track answers the question "how do you start off a night of industrial techno?" but the strangled vocal sample is so creepy that it might be best to save this one for getting people to leave the dance floor. "In Transit" picks up the pace, but per its title we don't go anywhere in particular. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. There is no light at the beginning either. There is only darkness here.
