Crackboy - Something For

  • Samples don't come much hoarier than the ol' "Something for your mind…" a cappella. The vocal, originally recorded by New York's C'hantal (on their 1990 track "The Realm"), has been repurposed by everyone from Speedy J to the Wighnomy Brothers to D-Nox & Beckers. Now Paris' Crackboy uses it as the centerpiece of his new EP for I'm a Cliché. Incredibly, he milks it for more than mere nostalgia, wrapping it around a lumbering bass-and-drum groove that's battered by a repeated vocal hiccup. It's a little bit mean and a whole lot messy, with long, ragged acoustic snare rolls whipping it into a rabid froth. Five-and-a-half minutes of pure mayhem. The rest of the EP follows in similar fashion. "More Order" is an overloaded acid jam lying somewhere between the Chemical Brothers' "Electronic Battle Weapons" and Rex The Dog's roiled electro techno, as irreverent as it is heavy. "Hilinner Hi-NRG Mix" shows a softer side, at least at first, with blushing chords and rattling, almost incidental percussion, before puffing up its chest like a big, ungainly bird in mating season. Crackboy's Vivid Incident EP was impressive; this one, especially tracks one and three, is thrilling.
