James Ferraro - Condo Pets EP

  • The thing that I think is so wonderful about the new James Ferraro record is that it's funny as hell. There's really no other way to describe an EP that basically sounds like Bret Easton Ellis's prose come to life. "Eco-Tot" is a David Hockney painting. There are party blowers. The beat is dumb and unaware and straight outta L.A. Story. (These are compliments by the way.) I don't know if you want to pay money to hear this, of course. Ferraro's project is art more than anything else, the capturing of a vibe. But it still sounds like an art project. I mean, I'm very glad that someone's doing it. And that it exists...but I guess there's something to be said for performance art that's both pleasing and makes you think. I don't find myself coming back for more in the same way that Autre Ne Veut's vocal acrobatics on "Sweetheart" does, or Laurel Halo has me dancing in my seat. Don't get me wrong. Let's "Find Out What's On Carrie Bradshaw's iPod." But don't be surprised when the conceptualism of a group like ABC sneaks in, and the awkwardness of James Ferraro doesn't even register.
