Ida Engberg - Blue Yonder

  • The problem with writing about Drumcode releases is that they're all kind of similar. I mean that in a positive and negative way. Of late, Adam Beyer's imprint has channelled a very specific sound, an attribute which is both its greatest strength and weakness. To repeat myself; "loops, insistent percussion and bold low end." With her label debut, fledgling producer Ida Engberg doesn't challenge the status quo. "Blue Yonder" is certainly well-produced, will work a dance floor and slots nicely into the Drumcode canon, but it lacks any real spark. "Junoverse," meanwhile, samples the vocal from Sun Ra's 1974 track "Space Is the Place." It manages to stand out a little better, employing a grand pad which sweeps dramatically over highly rhythmic percussion. Engberg maintains interest by means of bass subtraction and addition. There's little to say past that, unfortunately.
