Suburb - Vorstadt

  • Is Suburb deep, or is Suburb far out? Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but this rather shadowy entity doesn't sound burrowed inside themselves so much as out there in the world, seeing everything through altered eyes. As soon as they drop that thumping and ultimately familiar deep house kick drum pattern on "Motor," the lead track on Vorstadt, we hear glass shattering—a real-world consequence for all that boom. And even as the track continues on in more or less typical fashion, this weird palpability never quite subsides: we hear wind chimes, guitar licks and a hi-hat a touch too flangey to have come straight out of a 909. "Pade," a brief but not unsubstantial downtempo excursion, finds Suburb wandering into a little-known urban park, with Oni Ayhun-reminiscent chords ping-ponging off buildings and chirping birds surveying from the trees. On "33RPM," the duo seem to have bumped into a living, breathing string quartet and convinced them to vibe. It takes Smallpeople to snap them out of their sensuality kick, and while that troika turns in a fine "33RPM" remix in their famously smooth style, it feels a tad chilly next to the more tactile originals.
