- Grinkgo is the second release this year from French "melodicbreakcore" artist Ruby My Dear. At five tracks long it uses the space to navigate through a dizzying breadth of sonic concepts. If Grinkgo is Pandora's Box, "Mashed Rope" is a first peek at the chaos—a writhing tumult of electronic creatures lashed together with classical stamps that feel increasingly strained by the breakcore pressure. "Gherkin To Chlorine" begins with a drugged "Come on my Selector" intro but quickly leaves the Squarepusher hi-hats behind, diving straight into a raga-spiked onslaught of IDM-motorbike breaks, occasionally dipping into gabba-like pulses. Don't be fooled by the spacy reggae lure of "Inek"—this is another raga-jungle effort that strands you even deeper into gabba territory with no other alternative but to dance, dance, dance, dance…but just as it switches up to Hellfish/DJ Producer darkness the reggae stab returns for an IDM finale. "EsikIclik" is probably the most incoherent track on the EP, beginning with Middle Eastern-tinged big beat before mashing together more raga, rap and opera samples with layers of IDM percussion, bassline wobble and moody drum and bass atmospherics, with a token toe dip in the gabba pool. The whole thing concludes with a melancholic tapestry of classical-meets-breakcore, a style pioneered by Venetian Snares and his acclaimed 2005 album Rossz Csillag Alatt Született. But while it may be easy to call "7C0" a cheap "Szamár Madár," the nostalgic gramophone-esq intro and final descent into jazzy Warp scapes makes it stand up on its own.
