Daniel Mehlhart vs. Gabriel Ananda - 3rd Note

  • 3rd Note once again sees Frankfurt resident Daniel Mehlhart share a record with Gabriel Ananda. However, unlike last year's GCF on Ananda's own Basmati imprint, it's not a collaborative effort. Mehlhart takes the A-side with "Black Holes," a meek cut which is strung around a muted shaker and a series of wide, sweeping notes. It's pretty simplistic—or at least appears to be—something which works entirely to its advantage. It's the kind of track that fits perfectly into the middle of a big room set; a less demanding groover to keep the momentum going while still providing a rest. On the other side, Ananda's effort is more overtly peak-time. A funky little bassline leads the proceedings, coupled with tumbling percussion that could only be the work of the German producer. There's a hook, too. It's not so in-your-face, but you'll probably be hearing it a lot in the next few months anyway. Thin, synthetic strings rub together with increasing intensity, before Ananda twice whips them away to showcase the bassline. Like Mehlhart's effort, it's seemingly simple stuff, confident of its own substance.
