DJ Phono - There's Confetti In My Shoe

  • An extensive departure from Deichkind's serrated electro hip-hop, band member DJ Phono's debut release turns down the volume quite considerably with three lovely, delicate house tracks. Given his history, they're surprisingly graceful and varied. "Knarhcslhuk" is a raggedy patchwork of bristly synths, loose bass and twang. It's sweet and disjointed, with the melancholy of a lone rag doll resting against an empty bedroom wall. "Paper Aeroplane" is a deep, reflective, beatless piece of music that sighs with yearning chords and falling drops of rain under leaden skies. Nowhere is Confetti more serene than in "Gone" though. Little puffs of smoke gently break into glowing swells and piano chords, upping the groove and the gravity just as gently later on. It's all carried along by a pattering house undercurrent; nothing major, but enough for it to go in the record bag rather than just staying at home for those late night sessions. David August's remix is tight, funky tech with descending cyber basslines alternated with lilting sections in the vein of the original, but driven by a much more pumping beat.
