- The mysterious Redshape first came to my attention in 2006, via his Shaped World EP. Back then, I was impressed by his ability to create ominous atmospheres with relatively light sounds. Though Sebastian Kramer has since been unmasked, the German's highly recognisable work seems to have retained this quality through the years. In Trust We Space is a decent enough example, though in this particular case, it's more melancholic than foreboding.
The title track seems to introduce swishy cymbal hits almost arbitrarily. Their routine, abrupt halts always come a short time later, teasing with never quite fulfilled momentum. That's part of the package though, with gentle pad sweeps and mournful bells completing a mood that speaks entirely of lost opportunities and failed ambitions. On the other side, "Laser!" seems undeserving of the exclamation-marked title. Not because it's not interesting, but because it seems too serious. This time there are no fake promises of momentum. Like a locomotive, quasi-acid bass, a shaker and hat gather speed throughout, urged along by a quietly shrieking whistle. It doesn't end up too far from where it began, but the ride sure is fun.
