Hot Natured - Forward Motion

  • How should a dance act go "pop," however putatively? One way might be to write a song so damn catchy it obliterates any questions about where it came from, who it might be for and why those things might matter. At least, I go around humming the chorus of "Forward Motion"—Ali Love's irresistible "Got me rocking in forward mo-o-o-o-tion"—without intending to. There's something very 2-step about its syncopation, though the beat is flatter. Love's soulboy tone probably has a lot to do with that. And "mo-o-o-o-tion" isn't the only hook—eventually a few things present themselves that way. The limpidly-sung "Now I can't [pause] go back," in isolation, could fuel any number of 12-minute into-the-drain ultra-purist mysterioso house acts, but here it's just the preamble. The gently massaged soulful vocal snippet (appears to be male, hard to tell) that flits through much of "B4 the Bentley" is the track's highlight; the rest of it is a lightly jammed-out keyboard exercise of no great interest except as another example that Jamie Jones and Lee Foss can nail that '80s sound. "Ice Cream Party" is a deliberately off-the-wall '82-stomp funk that leaps between backdrops and goes in and out of focus a lot; in short, harmless.
