MD - It Ain't What It Used to Be

  • Each time I listen to this white label from Holland, it brings a smile to my face. I'm not quite sure what does it. The breakdown, where boompty bass and the spiralling strains of a 303 massage one another? Perhaps the rapid opening bleeps, with their slow-ascending chord changes? Or is it just the thick, juicy feel of it all? Whatever the case, its effect is undeniable. The "breakdown" part is relative, too; there's very little room for contemplation, or even a pause for breath. On "Megalopolitan Soul," the pace slackens considerably, though there are still no breaks to be found. Like the A-side, the vibe is fairly classic, with harmonious chanting, a tidy synth refrain and funky bass. It's got that carefree '90s vibe. The only thing missing is a bit of calm, a touch more subtlety. It feels like MD was working to some imaginary time limit, wringing his synths of every last drop before they ran out of batteries. I'm sure there's been some talk over who this mystery producer might be. My answer to that question is: Who cares? Let's just hope they keep making records.
