Djungl - Kitchen Portal

  • Ethereal Sound continues its velvet glove assault on the house music world with an EP from a relatively unknown name to those outside Russia. Due to the vagaries of the modern electronic music world, Djungl's work as a DJ and promoter has perhaps gone underrecognized. Nonetheless, he's had a hand in shaping Moscow's modern club culture via his radio show on 106.8 and his role in clubs like Propaganda and Gramophone. He's someone that AntonZap likely has quite a bit of respect for, so Zap returns the favor by offering up space on his moody and melancholic imprint for four tracks of downbeat house. "Time" is mixtape fodder, featuring a lengthy discourse on the nature of the title. "Kitchen Portal" has an intriguingly spare bassline, instead leaving more room open for atmosphere, while "Bouncy Chair" stretches out and gets funky. An untitled track closes things out, and its lack of title is telling, as it probably has the least amount of personality here. Nonetheless, Djungl elsewhere proves that just because you may not know the name all that well, there's good reason to take note of his Time EP.
