Ray Okpara - Booty

  • Some loops just have it, and the absolutely itchy rhythm guitar lick at the center of the title track of Ray Okpara's Booty EP definitely has it. It's short—like under-a-second short—and it eventually recedes from the track's focal point, becoming a background figure among other rhythm devices, not to mention a floating parade of dubbed-in-and-out voices and keyboards and slow-exhale cymbals. It's a glorified drum, basically. But it's so clipped and witty it holds your attention for nearly the whole track—aiming for the cleanest-possible-long-mixes market means a far longer ending than strict listening necessitates. (This is true for all four tracks here.) Nothing quite as fetching as that guitar lick comes up on the rest of Booty, though the treated congas of "Modern Dance" come enticingly close. They do come up against a choppy, over-determined hi-hat, though, not to mention some unnecessary whoosh in the first half. The woody, clanky percussion that marks "Crabapple Road," alas, just doesn't have the same kind of give as the others.
