dEbruit - Sis-Surprise

  • For his latest bout of delightful cultural digest, dEbruit has laid his kaleidoscopic sights on Turkish folk music (apparently inspired by his move to a part of London with a large Turkish population). At this point, if you're not running far, far away, you're probably in a state of Boomkat-induced salivation at the thought of playful bass music so wholeheartedly embracing obscure international musics. The result is neither as earth-shattering nor as shallow as either reaction would let on: the French producer runs with the concept and creates the most solid and dependable EP of his current trilogy. The Turkish theme basically just gives him a new toolbox to build his sample bank from: the four tracks here are still dEbruit's now familiar blend of weird instruments with UK-friendly swung hip-hop beats. Take "Acorde Don," for example. While it is, in fact, based mostly around an accordion, it's more foundational than centrepiece, and the track carries all of the hefty swing and gorgeous synth melodies dEbruit is fast becoming known for. The accurately-titled "Turkish Ish" pits zurna flutes against restless, slithering basslines and vocoder vocal hooks, while "Lil Zurna" uses the same palette and threatens to crush it with heaving mutant crunk. The ultimate moment of synthesis is "Mezdi." A gloriously dusty sample of Turkish string instruments is interwoven in between metallic hits, as handclaps and distorted voices conspire in an inescapable, persuasive vortex of international post-cultural funk.
