Bruno Gauthier - Existing Reality EP

  • Bruno Gauthier's been involved in music since the early '90s, releasing as Lady B on F Communications and Good Life among other things. Existing Reality, then, on the newborn Berlin-based CTF label, has a large dose of original Detroit sensibilities: a straightforward beat underpins layers of synths, with lines that sound like they're generated by the classic machines (check the unstable detuning of the pad on the A—a typical quirk of an aging analogue synth) simply coming in and out to give a kind of progressive flow; it wouldn't be a great surprise if he's basically just kept the same production setup over the last twenty years. In "Existing Reality," he builds epic cascades, and it's a piece that you could imagine filling a hall with atmosphere, or perhaps setting the tone for a big night as you just come in. A brooding snarl twists throughout, and soft stabs drenched in delay permeate its fabric. "Music Takes Control" surfaces rather than winding even deeper, crowding the soundstage somewhat with more upfront sounds and looped diva vocals. It's probably a matter of taste, really, and its slinky aqueous line comes back in later, but for me it references the less subtle, more ravey side of '90s dance a bit too heavily. Although executed less finely, the individualistic slant on the classic sound is still there, and anyway, "Existing Reality" is a track well worth checking out for those who value the journeying clubbing experience.
