- Frank Martiniq's been releasing since the mid-'90s on labels such as Cologne's Boxer Recordings, but it's both his lengthy, slow building DJ sets and his work as a sound and Reaktor ensemble designer for Native Instruments that feature most heavily on his productions. Eschewing the instant hit provided from hooks and white-noise breaks, he prefers to hold sound design, production and patience in pride of place in his tracks in order to create a deep mood, and Nights in Black Satin is no exception.
Despite kicking off with a deliciously textured grind of a rhythm that seems to be sculpted in mid air, "Nights in Black Satin" soon heads under into smooth washing serenity, both cosy like a blanket and decidedly current. Separately, the lush sounds are elegantly poised, and they're molded together into homogeneity, without any muddiness at all. In "Get Back" he makes more eccentric choices: There are a variety of curious humming, rippling chimes, and rising chords detune ever so slightly. Again, they drift together in their collective current, and, (particularly the A side) they're slow and gentle enough to be used earlier on, as a springboard to higher energy levels, but also (particularly the B) rich and spaced-out enough to give the feel that we're well submerged at peak time.
