Model Man - Shouldn't I Be Dead by Now?

  • To date, Brooklyn's WT label has released Hunee's playful yet monstrous house Tour de Force EP and nuanced vintage techno from Entro Senestre. For their latest release by Model Man, AKA DJ Overdose from The Hague, they go further into leftfield with befuddling and beguiling results. Ambitious as an EP, this serves as an imaginary soundtrack for an obscure and confounding '80s horror flick. "Honesty Doesn't Pay" is the type of shimmering upbeat new wave instrumental that one wishes actually populated such VHS fare. As with similar '80s nostalgia, the memories Model Man has of that era fare far better than the actuality of that time. From there, Model Man veers into delectably schlocky horror darkness, with two analog cuts suffused with the kind of slo-mo arpeggiated dread that Goblin excelled in. "Hoe de Pet Staat" thickens that mood with an ambience that would double as dinner music for zombies. The title track exudes menace; one can almost see the silvery light of back alley puddles getting splashed in a chase scene from a limping madman. And yet there are flying cars overhead and a gentle sense of escape embedded in it, too.
