- Jason Fine's music is inspired by his hometown's legacy, both in his musical and theoretical approach. Like Detroit's greatest electronic music producers, Fine's tracks—without getting too pedantic, maybe "mood pieces" is a more accurate description—have an otherworldliness to them, providing a glimpse at other places, imagined or real. Indeed, on Colors, the feeling pervades that while the intricately woven melodies and complex beats are beautiful in their own right, they are really just providing pointers to a hitherto unexplored place.
If that sounds like too much of a high falutin' concept, then it's also true that Fine's beautifully evocative sounds work purely on a musical level. That said, for this reviewer, the mysterious, eerie chords unfolding over lithe, metallic rhythms on "Orange," call to mind a dreamlike state, that part of a night's sleep where dreams ebb into reality. "Blue" conjures up a more menacing feeling, with dark bass sounds purring their way through carefully arranged percussive jolts.
"Violet" mines a similar path, with austere drums and eerie synths mapping out the accompaniment to a dysfunctional world. Finally, "Red" shifts back into more dreamy sounds: Like a combination of Red Planet and Convextion, the warm electro bass and spacey, fragile melodies exude a sense of innocent wonder about the world. Don't pass up this chance to join Fine on his journeys.
