Tom Noble presents - Liger Vision EP

  • When the vinyl promo arrived bearing an unheard-of name that even the all-seeing gaze of big brother Google failed to recognise, I got excited. Fanciful dreams of misunderstood funk visionaries, dusty DAT-tapes, and what secrets further digging might unfurl only added to the charm of these six exquisite tracks. It was, then, certainly a dash to the romantic ideals to read the updated Clone website a few weeks later and learn that this was no less than a pseudonym for modern-day boogie fetishist, Tom Noble. The musical accomplishment of the record itself, however, ensured no lasting disappointment was inflicted. In their strict adherence to the boogie standard, the tracks are relatively indistinguishable from one another, but such is their perfection of form that they are generic only of the highest level. An arsenal of Microkorgs, Minimoogs, Oberheim hits, dominant sevenths and step-progressions are brought to bear on these miniature pieces of electronic funk, with the abrupt, mid-bar endings of certain tracks encouraging a belief that these are more exercises in style than stand-alone hits. It's all delightfully swung—with not so much as a peep of a quantizer in earshot—and the quality of the sound is so raw and untweaked that distraction by detail is not possible, focusing attention on the cause at hand: The funk.
