From one of the best CD compilations of the year comes the accompanying vinyl set. The set contains three vinyls and 6 tracks taken from the double CD.
Side A - I first came across this tune last year on Jimmy Van M’s Trance Nation America. I was blown away and have loved it ever since. This mix contains the main sample of the Phantom like vocals, which is used very nicely. The track is quite dark in parts and has a fairly strong bass line. It is a track that I would love to hear out.
Side B - Slide (AKA Peter Martin) has delivered something quite different in this track. As the name would suggest it does have hints of disco and a funky edge to it. Think funky breaks. A track that could quite easily be played by the likes of Plump DJ’s.
Side C - this track was produced by Australia’s own Andy Page with the help of Nu-breed DJ extraordinaire Lee Burridge. This was Lee’s first time in the studio, and he couldn’t have picked a better partner in crime to get off to an impressive start. This is a great breaks track that is very upfront and it is guaranteed to get bodies moving on the dance floor. Rather than being an obvious track, predictable in where it is going, this track has many twists and turns. After a small breakdown, it rockets back into breaks territory with great force. A top tune.
Side D - Synaptic Gap is producers Tony Burgess and Stephen Porter. This is a dark little number, with an eerie vocal sample that seems to fade in and out. It is a combination of dark progressive and breaks.
Side E - The original of this track first appeared on Global Underground 19 Los Angeles mixed by John Digweed. But this version has been given the treatment by Sydney’s ex-Tweekin’ boy Phil Smart and one third of the highly successful production group Infusion, Jamie Stevens. The original tune was massive at the beginning of the year and this remix has just breathed new life into it. This mix has a stronger bass line to the original and is a little more up-tempo. It is not quite as deep as the original, yet has a bit more of a break beat feel to it. It is a nice rework of a great track.
Side F - Excession (AKA Grant Collins) is probably best known for his track Vega, and Ben Shaw’s recognition has greatly increased since the release of the huge tune “So Strong”. Here they have come together to create Sunscape. Floating over this track is some very trancey and spacey type sounds. This could really be used to build up a crowd without sending them too far over the edge or into a frenzy.
The only disappointing thing about this vinyl set is that it doesn’t contain all the tracks from the double CD. A very fine vinyl set that people will still be playing in 6 months to a year. It comes with high recommendation.
