Shonky - Cluborama EP

  • There's something about the title track from Shonky's Cluborama that makes me feel a little sick inside, in a good way. The way the melancholic strains of the melody wrap themselves around your brain, serve to remind you (or certainly me at least) of, well, everything. If that's a little more philosophical than you'd like, then here are the salient facts; the bassline is soothing yet urgent, the hook is relentless and the whole thing just oozes class. If it weren't for the obvious Shonky-esque details that mark it as a modern work, its drifting pads and classic synth sounds would sound quite at home in the production cabinet of someone from the early '90s. After the emotionally draining effect of "Cluborama," Shonky injects a healthy dose of funk, as though to remind us what dance music is for. "Maraboutage" is an example of why he—along with fellow Freak n'Chic-er Dyed Soundorom—is arguably the crown prince of bouncy, tech house with indistinguishable vocals. "Dorothee Club," meanwhile, sounds like someone's scraped all the spare bits off the cutting room from Jamie Jones' Don't You Remember the Future, mashed them all together, chewed them up, spat them out and managed to come up with an lovely, cerebral dollop of tech house, albeit without managing to achieve a whole lot more than the sum of its—admittedly excellent—parts. Is this is the future of past house music? Here's hoping so.
