Shake Shakir - At the Bonnie Brook

  • There was a time when Anthony 'Shake' Shakir records were few and far between. That time is no longer. The Detroit producer has seemingly been making up for lost time as quickly as possible over the past 12 months on the back of his Rush Hour-aided career retrospective, piling on a raft of new releases to keep booking agents and clubs aware of his presence. The tactic has worked. Europe has seen more of Shakir than ever, and fans have gotten plenty of reasons to remember (and find out for the first time) why Shake is so highly regarded. "At the Bonnie Brook" offers yet another reason. Its rough-edged beat opens up to melodic stabs. Given a bit of glide, they'd be lovely, but Shake cuts them off so that they retain a bite that's reflected in the crunching gears that turn underneath. Osborne lightens things up, sweetening the melody and thinning the drums. Less distinctive, but more accessible, it sounds like the music you might hear in a '80s video game as you travel from fighting bad guys to the boss, ratcheting up the tension as you go along. Portuguese duo Photonz have quickly gathered a reputation for their varied discography, and they suitably can't be constrained to one rework here. The Bang mix does what it says on the tin, accentuating the original's stabs, while the Lisbon Funk version celebrates all that is old-school and tropical. Both are delightful.
