Bubble Club - Violet Morning Moon

  • Don't get this Bubble Club confused with the Viennese club of the same name. The one we're talking about is the work of London's Dan Keeling, the man originally behind the early '00s imprint New Religion, releasing Kirk Degiorgio, Stacey Pullen and Juan Atkins tracks before receding from view. According to the Bubble Club website, after a five-year hiatus, a "refresher course of Ron Hardy mixtapes sent (Keeling) back into the studio." No one will immediately hear raw Chicago house here. Instead, Bubble Club's first single feels like a ride in a rented convertible winding around an island mountain come sunset (or sunrise), which is to say, it's sweetly Balearic, warm, driving, ever-cresting. As a former label head, it's obvious that in his time off, Keeling's kept up with the talent, expertly handing the wheel over to Dr. Dunks (Eric Duncan of Rub N Tug and Still Going fame) for the B-side. Duncan floors the kick and makes the peripheral bits (sumptuous synth washes and gleaming guitar lines) echo around the track. He reveals a different vista as well as a shimmering snatch of a vocal line left buried in the original. To top it off, Duncan's extended and ecstatic breakdown becomes one of the most melodic and satisfying in his recent uptick of remix work and makes "Violent Morning Moon" an instant contender for peak track of the summer.
