Gunnar Jonsson - Muskelminne

  • With everything from Flying Rhino-era trance with Echolab, cloudy ambient dub as Stress Assassin and more experimental fare as Porn Sword Tobacco over the last dozen years, it's impressive that Henrik Jonsson has managed to keep another trick up his sleeve for this long. But trick he does, revealing an additional point of view for his delicate melodic structures via a newly inked partnership with Kontra-Musik. The organic, jazz-inflected deep house of "Massagerutin" recalls prime-era Svek; it hangs together loosely, with an even-tempered facade that doesn't hint at the incremental tonal shifts within. Key tones gradually swell and distort, then fan into cosmic-inflected trails, creating a subtle emotional progression that will only reward a commitment to all of its 11 minutes. Likewise, Jonsson's sophisticated subtlety and lightness of touch enhance the gently shifting textures of "Morgonanga." Each beat and pad is hollowed out, allowing airy dub effects to breeze around, through and over, while palette-cleansing washes of sound over barely-there bass pulses give time for the track's gentle groove to find some traction. Bonus beat "Lilla huset pu prarie" is a tiny, jarring riddle. With a rough, lo-fi loop and guttural pulses, it's too brief for the kind of progression that such a Spartan arrangement needs, but it possesses a no-nonsense analog funk that will hopefully be further developed on future releases. Detroit prodigy Jason Fine has long been the sole ace in the hole for Kontra-Musik, Jonsson's newest musical identity may herald the arrival of a worthy counterpart.
