Norm Talley – Cosmic Waves EP

  • While Norm Talley is more recognisable as a purveyor of slow burning deep Detroit tracks, Cosmic Waves proves the Motor City producer has more than one trick up his sleeve. Cosmic Waves is a tough release; relentless beats are combined with snappy claps and stabbing keys backed by intense, almost droning strings. Bordering on minimalism, it's perfectly capable of encapsulating a dance floor. The original is accompanied by two solid remixes. First up is Detroit comrade Delano Smith. He rearranges the keys deftly, adding a silky house vibe that he has become renowned for via releases on Third Ear and his own Mixmode Records. XDB's take, meanwhile, is as idiosyncratic as his original productions. Gritty and gristly sounds are endemic to the Greek producer's analogue approach. Although the pounding kick drum is reminiscent of an Echospace release, it still sounds refreshingly sparse and crisp. His rework is filled with hiss and feedback that give it depth and warmth; backed by delayed keys, the cymbals crash as iridescent birds squawk and shimmer in the background. True to form, it sounds like little else around.
