Nuel - Aquaplano Ltd 01

  • The first track on the first release on Aquaplano Ltd sounds a bit like what every first track on a first release should sound like. It's a primal roar, a rearing back before things start to become (slightly) clear(er). Murk, as you might expect, is the name of the game for this EP on Donato Dozzy's imprint. We get submarine deep, the sort of depth that would seem pointless if there weren't tiny pinpricks of melody shining through the darkness, slowly rising to the surface. The untitled A1 almost gets there before it abruptly stops, just as your head seems like it will reach above water. A pressing plant mistake? Maybe. The metaphor here, though, is too juicy to pass up. What makes the music of Nuel (and Dozzy) so special is that they somehow skirt the edge of a cheesiness—tranciness, progressiveness, somethingelseness—but also seem to know exactly when to pull back. And even when they tip over the edge, it'll soon be followed by the delicious ambience of something like the untitled A2, which sounds like it might fit perfectly on Pop Ambient 2011. It's the same thing on the flip—with the first track acting as the bleep techno masterpiece that will undoubtedly hook curious DJs. Perfect for 1, 3 and 5 AM. (And beyond.)
