Unknown Artist - The Freeze

  • The Freeze. The Melt Down. And that's just about all you're going to get from this white label distributed by Juno, except that it's likely from someone based in the United States, judging by the US-HOUSE-001 catalogue number. Of course the only reason that curiosity abounds are the results: "The Freeze" and "The Melt Down" are cut from the same techno-tinged deep house cloth, but offer up a nice tweak on the genre. Less interested in clubbing you over the head with their emotive qualities, the focus here is on groove and quirk. Despite having what might pass for a siren, "The Freeze" is remarkably understated. That's due to the production's subtle build. (And the siren sounding like it's five miles away and slathered in reverb.) It's a ramp from warm-up to a set's next level, starting slowly but not overpowering when it comes time to announce itself. "The Melt Down" plays with the siren more, twisting it so that it becomes the main feature, and cements itself as peak-time material for those on a deeper tip. In the mold of Levon Vincent's recent work, the groove is undeniable but the joy is in the way that two genres come together to create something that sounds remarkably distinctive.
