Spitzer - Roller Coaster

  • You gotta hand it to Infine. You really don't have any idea what's coming next with Agoria's label. Avant-garde piano trios, feminine techno and, now, progressive house. Nick Warren loves Spitzer's new EP, and that should give you a pretty good indication of where the French duo is coming from: Techno with big emotions, yet not so many that it turns into cheese. Warren's Global Underground sets were master classes in this sort of sound. But while you may regard progressive as a thing of the past, it's clear that there's never not a market for the sort of tunes found on Roller Coaster. It's like Joris Voorn said recently, "There's a lot of this functional stuff, but the really stand-out tracks, I can't find these so much." The noisy climaxes of the dark and stomping "Roller Coaster" fits the bill, so does "Sir Chester"'s bouncy melodics. (The latter sounds like it would mix famously into the one song that Voorn highlighted as an anthem, 360's "Neon.") "Too Hard to Breathe" is on a different tip, an honest-to-goodness pop song. It should come as no surprise to those who know Spitzer. The duo remixed Kylie Minogue in 2008, but coming on Infine, it's yet another reminder of how devoted Agoria is to a simple idea: Good music is good music, regardless of genre.
