Unknown Artist - Larva

  • The mysterious artist behind the Weevil Series has taken a cue from his nameless techno peers distributing through the same channels, the Hardwax emporium, and puts out hand-stamped and information scarce white labels in limited numbers. Apparently the first in a series of three records named after the "three development stages of a weevil: larva, pupa, adult," the Larva installment features dark but funky drum & bass and dubstep rollers with an industrial tinge. A1 is on a breakbeat tip, set off by rolling tribal drums that are soon engulfed by a rolling sub bass wave. Indecipherable vocal samples, bleeps and drones build up a momentum but the track still feels somewhat incomplete. Drifting seamlessly into A2, similar ingredients are better utilized, with the wobbling bassline interplaying with glitchy vocal samples and beat manipulations, creating a driving dubstep number. On the flipside, B1 is the big treat here, drum & bass with an industrial vibe to it. This sounds like techstep written by an abandoned old factory, the metallic raspy beats skip around and shape the ever warping bassline and create a funky and grabbing song from a bleak and hard-edged sound palette.
