Gardner & Thomas - Turn To Try

  • Next up on the mighty Hooj label, following from the impressive 2 disc release of Blackwatch’s ‘I’m Here’, sees Dave Gardner team up with Blackwatch man Michael Thomas and New York vocalist Emmanuel. ‘Turn to Try’ is the result, and it comes with two mixes from the duo as well as a very welcome Red Jerry mix. On the a-side we have the Full Vocal Mix. Tough intricate drum patterns are the major feature of this track early on. Emmanuel’s dark and moody vocals then take the front seat as subtle strings and a baseline help the track take direction. The 2nd half of the track see a subtle melody/synth conclude the first of two mixes from Gardner & Thomas. On the b-side the duo provide the Danceteria Mix. From the word go this is a lively affair. The drums aren’t as stuttered as the Vocal mix and the tearing baseline really gives this mix a dirtier outlook. The vocals in this mix do not stand out as much due to the musical activity and beautiful nature of the drum patterns. Also on the b-side is the fantastic Red Jerry Mix. A standard 4/4 drum pattern is the go here but the strength in this mix lies in Red Jerry’s trademark funky baseline and twisted psychedelic melodies. The vocal gains extra strength in Red Jerry’s happy environment, and its hard to not like this mix. It may be a bit too cute for some but this mix really add’s strength to this release. On the whole, another solid release from Hooj. 3 mixes included to cover the tough, quirky and cuter styles. Another release worthy of a look in.
