Patrice Scott - Distance Against Time

  • Let's be honest: There isn't much mystery when it comes Patrice Scott's work on Sistrum. Either the melody works for you or it doesn't. The Detroit producer's deep house sounds as if the clock stopped sometime in the mid-'90s. But you know what they say about stopped clocks, and here it's definitely the right time on both sides. "Eclipse"'s beat is powerful enough to warrant a "Beats" version on the A-side, and the synth programming only makes it better. Scott pushes his typically sunny, tinkling riff against yearning strings, contrasting happiness and melancholy. The beats beneath, however, are the key, adding a smoky vibe to the push-pull of the mids and highs. "Distance Against Time," meanwhile, is a smooth roller where everything works in concert. The beat and theme set things out before a single piano chord pushes its way forward, casually giving an extra momentum to an already powerful song. Deep, epic and well composed, Scott's Distance Against Time is a nearly perfect exemplar of classic deep house. More importantly, though, it's got that ineffable something that raises it above those mining the same vibe at the moment. Unlike those awkward retreads, this is one 12-inch that is built to last. (Broken clocks notwithstanding.)
