- The key word to remember with P. Toile's 10 Plus One Reason is restraint. She's released music steadily since 2004 on labels such as Mothership and Moodmusic, but on this debut release for the NOICE! imprint what goes down in the beginning, goes down toward the middle and happens again in the end. Forget the after party. This one is for the exhausted after-after partiers who appreciate a steady groove. The right DJ could animate "10 Plus 1," but its soft congas, wet claps and squelchy synth stabs saturated in reverb are perfect to shuffle along to.
Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint owner Lucy takes a more fiery approach to "10 Plus 1" and makes it tougher, but keeps the original's party-lag vibe. The contrast is refreshing. Sweeping chimes keep this mix pretty, but post-reverbed claps make it better for the dance floor. London's Alex Nagshineh takes his mix all over the proverbial board. The opening background chatter alludes to the lounge atmosphere of P. Toile's original, but Nagshineh quickly changes the chatter for pitched down vocals and a swinging bass, and then toys with minimal-influenced bleeps and bloops. Jade and Diamond Setter's mix might be a tech house tribute to Micheal Jackson, but stands head and shoulders above the other mixes here. Whatever those MJ moaning samples might actually be, the Beirut-based duo has made them sound great. This mix creates a bit of sexy mystery (isn't mystery always a bit sexy?) while it hangs onto the original's tropical theme.
