Anton Zap - You Are Not Alone

  • Anton Zap's beguiling deep house is in full force on this, his latest EP for German imprint Millions of Moments. The label has often leaned toward the dubbier side of things, and Zap comes correct with four takes on "You Are Not Alone." It's atmospheric stuff for the most part. The Classic Dub, for example, is content to while away its time with one ringing bell stretched beautifully into the distance, a murky bassline and a nice counterpoint that takes its sweet time to reveal itself. It's an opening hour tune to be sure, but you likely won't find a finer mood-setter anytime soon. Zap plays around with a reggae vocal next, picking up the pace to join the uncredited singer. His contributions are mostly contained to echoed sighing accompaniment, but that's all the rolling beat seems to need to keep things going. The Party Down Dub, meanwhile, takes after the Classic Dub. It's almost reminiscent of Pole's early recordings without the grit Stefan Betke was able to pull from his malfunctioning Waldorf 4-Pole filter. Zap reverts back to his usual deep house manner with the Adide version. It's a track that could have easily fit on his most recent Underground Quality release and, considering the heady surroundings, feels slightly out of place. It's fine work, but the other three tunes on You Are Not Alone are some of his best tracks to date. With reportedly only 100 copies pressed, it'd be advised to get in quick. Your next opening DJ set will be far better with this in the crate.
