I:Cube - Falling EP

  • "What do you mean diverse? I make house and techno!" Sure you do, aspiring producer. But you don't make it nearly as well as I:Cube. Nicolas Chaix's remarkable versatility isn't exactly a rarity in the electronic music world. The difference is that Chaix sounds as comfortable making deep house as he does making acid or disco. His newest for Versatile proves the point ably, collecting a trio of tracks that sound nothing alike. "Falling" is slow and low piano-led disco that would likely find a nice home in a Mark E set, while "Operation Hypnosis" sounds like a lite-brite version of Belgian acid techno. And, as if that wasn't enough, "Un Dimanche Sans Fin" is sublime dub-wise techno. You know, just to rub it in. Chaix has been doing this stuff for almost 15 years on Versatile. And it stands to reason that he could do it 15 more. What makes Falling so special, though, is that each of these genre workouts are more than mere mimicry. It may be hard to hear—there are no sonic signatures like DJ Koze or Pépé Bradock—but that's because simple quality craftsmanship rarely leaves a trace.
