Entro Senestre - La Caccia

  • 2009 proved to be a great year for the discovery of new, underground talent from the US. From Disco Nihilist's raw, acid house to Gatekeeper's combinations of industrial dance and horror music, several previously unknown producers unexpectedly popped up to make a unique mark on the global electronic music landscape. This debut release from Connecticut resident Jon Beall, AKA Entro Senestre, continues this trend in 2010. Within the first 30 seconds of opener "La Caccia," you know what this 12-inch is going to be about: Synth-heavy vintage electro, a sound which almost vanished with the rise of Ed Banger crew, but which has been quietly making a comeback via new labels such as Lunar Disko and Echovolt. While "La Caccia" is definitely the most immediately gratifying track here, evoking similar euphoric melodies to Legowelt's "Disco Rout" or "DX Days," the rest of this release offers similar, sci-fi tinged escapades a-plenty. "The Last B-Boy" sounds like the tune an immortal, android-version of Man Parrish might produce in the year 2999, while the pounding, industrial-tinged "Glazed" comes off like a cross between Nitzer Ebb and classic NU Groove. The closing track "Gamma" is a long modulating jam similar to the recent work of Black Meteoric Star. None of these tracks are particularly revolutionary in approach or sound, but they are definitely satisfying in their ability to evoke deep emotions and imagery through the creative use of vintage gear. Entro Senestre's debut will hopefully prove to be a bellwether for similar fare in 2010, and not a curiosity in the currently deep-house heavy landscape of dance music. But even if it remains an anomaly, the discovery of another creative US producer from outside the usual metropolises can only be a good thing.
