Massimo Di Lena & Saac - Delirious / Crystal

  • Electronic music is by its very nature forward-thinking. An obsession with technology coupled with an attraction to the avant-garde has meant that electronic artists have produced some of the most complex music of their generation. However, the majority of new electronic releases are straightforward DJ tools that are chiefly concerned with gaining a reaction in a club situation. That's not to be dismissive of DJ tools. There are, of course, good and bad ones and the latest Love Letters From Oslo 12-inch is most certainly one of the better examples. The A side features an effort from Massimo Di Lena, AKA Massi DL, a man who has been injecting a loose Mood II Swing style groove into the Mannheim House template. Taking an incessant Chicago beat and grafting it to a filtered horn sample and sub-battering bottom end, Massi DL creates a highly energetic track thanks to the use of some ultra housey hi-hats. The kick/snare pattern disappears briefly midway through to make way for a Richard Pryor sample that mentions the all important word, "house," before clattering back in with highly pleasing results. The B-side of the release from newcomer Saac is even more straightforward. Taking a one-note hit and looping it through seven minutes of subtle filters and shuffling beat patterns, "Crystal" is an unrelenting tech house groover that will appeal to those who want to play something repetitive without losing the crowd's interest. Consistent as always, the vinyl-only branch of Federico Molinari and Nekes' Oslo label has once again offered up a release that will be worthy of consideration to house and techno DJ's from across the board. These tracks may not be reinventing the wheel, but they are still quite likely to rock the house.
